Encryption is a hot topic around the world today. Most people transparently use encryption every day and many of them are oblivious to this fact. Whenever someone hears "cryptography", it is a black box where magic happens.
In the world of ECM and Alfresco, encryption is a major factor. There are several regulations put forth by virtually every government around the world that place some cryptographic requirement on the storage of data. On top of that, companies have their own sensitive data that they want to keep secret from others, including the government.
This talk will briefly cover the history of cryptography. Once we have the context of cryptography, we will cover the purposes, advantages, and disadvantages behind hashing, encoding, symmetric, and asymmetric cryptography. The analysis will touch on performance and the real-world strength of each method.
Finally, the talk will introduce encryption at rest in Alfresco. We will cover master keys, HSM devices, key encrypting keys, key generation, and cipher engines. We will also cover integration potential with 3rd party servers and libraries.
